Operational for more than 100 years, Chicago State University is one of the oldest providers of higher education in the United States. A public institution, it enrolls more than 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Formerly known as Cook County Normal School, the university is located in Chicago. The university comprises various colleges, including health science, arts and science, business and education, and offer more than 50 associate and certificate programs and bachelor's, master's, specialist and doctoral degrees. Additionally, Chicago State University has a division of continuing education and nontraditional programs, providing extension courses, long-distance learning and noncredit programs. The university is approved by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Its public research library houses more than 50,000 volumes, periodicals, journals and nonacademic books.
